Weiter ging die Reise auf dem "Forgotten World Highway", das ist die gelbe Route (SH 43) von Stratford nach Taumarunui, von dort weiter nach Norden nach Te Kuiti. Das war der nördlichste Punkte der Reise. Von dort dann nach Süden, Highway am rechten Rand der Karte (Pureora Forest Park). Wir streiften den Lake Taupo (nur winziger blauer Fleck an der Kante der Karte, dann in den Tongariro National Park, mit der Seilbahn auf den Mt. Ruapehu (höchster Berg/Vulkan der Nordinsel), dann an die Küste nach Whanganui (SH4), dann weiter nach Süden nach Wellington und mit der Fähre zurück auf die Südinsel.

Von der Bergstation aus kann man mehr oder weniger lange Wanderungen unternehmen; wir hatten leider nicht viel Zeit. Und bei solcher Sicht lohnt es sich auch nicht.

From the top station you can go on a multitude of walks of different lengths - but unfortunately we didn't have much time, and in such cloudy conditions it is not worth doing it anyway.

Vor vielen Jahren  machte ich den Tongariro Crossing Track. Das ist die großartigste Tageswanderung in Neuseeland. Sie führt durch die Krater am Fuße dieser Vulkane.

Many years ago  (1995) I did the Tongariro Crossing Track. This is New Zealand's most fabulous day hike. It crosses various craters along the foot of these volcanoes (Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Tongariro). Nowadays the track is totally overrun with tourists.

Meine normale Tour zum Sign of the Kiwi endet in der Kurve links oben, und ich fahre dieselbe Strecke zurück. Ich bin nur einmal und nie wieder den Berg nach Governor's Bay (Nr. 4) hinuntergerollt. Es war mir zu steil und zu gefährlich. An der Küste entlang radle ich manchmal, aber nicht oft.

My standard ride to the Sign of the Kiwi ends in the top left corner, then I would cycle back home the same way. I only cycled down to Governor's Bay (#4) once, it was too steep and too scary to repeat. But I cycle along the coast sometimes.

Der Frühling ist die schönste Zeit, um in den Port Hills zu radeln, weil dann überall süße Lämmchen umherhüpfen.

Spring is the nicest time for cycling in the Port Hills because you see little lambs hopping around everywhere.

Wohin ich auch in Richtung Norden radle, ich muss immer über den Evans Pass, weil man mit dem Rad nicht durch den Tunnel fahren darf. Hier: via Sumner nach Brighton.

Wherever I pedal to north of Lyttelton, I always have to go via Evans Pass because it's not allowed to cycle through the road tunnel. Here: to New Brighton via Sumner. 

Zurück nach Hause auf der Mt. Pleasant Road zur Summit Road hinauf und von dort bergab zum Evans Pass und von dort nach Lyttelton.

Back home uphill on Mt Pleasant Road - which leads to the Summit Road. There downhill to Evans Pass and back to Lyttelton.

An der Küste entlang nach Süden, Zwischenstopp an den Moeraki Boulders, den "Kugeln des Teufels"

On the coastal route down south, pit stop at the Moeraki Boulders, also called "the Devil's Marbles". They once were on the sea floor but when the sea level dropped, they became part of the cliffs on land.

Die Kugeln lagen mal auf dem Meeresgrund, aber als der Meeresspiegel sank, waren sie an Land, begraben an diesen sandigen Klippen.

Im Lauf der Zeit werden die Kugeln durch Erosion freigelegt und liegen dann am Strand.

Over time high tide, rain and wind erode the cliffs and release the boulders.

Erosion führt auch dazu, dass sie im Lauf der Zeit zerfallen und wieder verschwinden.

Erosion also leads to them break up over time and disappear again.

Radtour auf dem Lake Dunstan Trail

Wir übernachteten in Clyde und mieteten dort auch Räder. Per Shuttlebus ging's nach Cromwell zum Start der Radtour, und wir radelten dann zurück nach Clyde. Auf diese Weise kann man so schnell oder so langsam fahren, wie man will, und muss sich nach keinem Zeitplan richten.
(Den deutlich längeren Otago Rail Trail sind wir vor vielen Jahren in zwei Tagen gefahren.)

We stayed in Clyde and rented bicycles there. Together with the bikes we were transported to the start of the ride in Cromwell, and from there we cycled back to Clyde. This way we could pedal as fast or as slowly as we wanted, as there was no need to follow a schedule.
(We cycled on the much longer Otago Central Rail Trail many years ago and did it in two days.)

Die ersten Kilometer führten am Clutha River entlang in die "falsche" Richtung. Nach der Überquerung der Brücke ging's dann in Richtung Clyde.

The first kilometres along the Clutha River led into the "wrong" direction. After crossing the bridge it was all up towards Clyde.

Der Lake Dunstan ist ein langgezogener schmaler Stausee mit dem Wasser des Flusses Clutha.
Es war kalt, aber nicht zu kalt. Eine Woche später, und es wäre unangenehm geworden.

The weather was cold but not too cold. One week later, and it would have been a different story.

Die Strecke ging auf und ab und einige Male auch im Zick-zack, damit man auch ohne Motor die höchsten Punkte der Strecke erreichen konnte, ohne das Rad zu schieben.

Wir waren froh, dass wir die Tour außerhalb der Saison machten (und während Neuseeland für Übersee-Touristen geschlossen war) und dass wir nur ganz selten Gegenverkehr hatten. Der Track ist teilweise so schmal, dass man bei Gegenverkehr absteigen muss. Das hätte bei mehr Radlern auf der Strecke total genervt.

We were happy that we did the tour outside the peak season and while New Zealand was closed for overseas tourists - and that there were barely any oncoming cyclists. The track often is so narrow that you have to get off the bike when there is oncoming traffic. If there had been more cyclists on the track the experience would have been marred.

Ein Überraschungsfund: vielleicht nicht das beste Eis der Welt, aber eines der besten Gelati in Neuseeland!

Auf der Rückfahrt nach Hause legten wir einen Stopp in Cromwell ein, das einen hübschen kleinen historischen Kern hat.

On the way back home we stopped for coffee in Cromwell which has a quaint little old town.

Just als wir dort waren, zog ein kleiner  Begräbniszug an uns vorbei. Die 1983 gefundenen Überreste eines unbekannten Goldgräbers, der vor ca. 140 Jahren starb, wurden zum Friedhof gebracht, wo er seine endgültige Ruhestätte fand..

Just when we were there, we came past a funderal procession. The remains of an unknown gold digger who had died about 140 years ago were taken to the cemetery. The remains had been found in 1983, and some items had been stolen from his grave.

Letzter Stopp/Last stop: Rakaia, bekannt für Lachs/famous for salmon.

Neuseeländische Waldtauben hatte ich im Lauf der Jahre vielleicht zwei-, dreimal bei uns auf einem Baum gesehen. Im Frühjahr/Sommer 2022 besuchten drei solche Riesenvögel fast täglich unseren Garten. Ich fand heraus, dass sie kein bisschen Angst haben und dass ich ihnen auf die Pelle rücken konnte, ohne dass sie wegflogen. Sie waren ganz besonders an den Weintrauben interessiert - die ich dann natürlich mit einem Netz vor dem Kahlfraß schützte!

Over the years I might have spotted New Zealand woodpigeons (Kereru) on the highest trees in our garden trees perhaps two or three times. But in spring and summer 2022 three such huge birds visited our garden on almost a daily basis, and often several times a day. They are not shy at all. I found out that I could get close to them without them flying away. They were most interested in the grapes - which I subsequently protected with bird netting!

The woodpigeons also enjoyed a drink of water and could spend ages at the bird bath and on their favourite tree.

Philomena kam via UK aus Odessa in der Ukraine. Diese Bären werden von zwei Frauen unter der Marke "Philomena Kloss" hergestellt. Mein Beitrag zur Unterstützung einiger Leute in der Ukraine. Große Gruppen auf Facebook und Instagram haben solche Bären (und Füchse und Wölfe) als Zeichen der Unterstützung und Solidarität adoptiert.

Philomena arrived from Odessa in Ukraine, via the UK. These bears are made by two women under the brand "Philomena Kloss". My support for some people in Ukraine. Huge communities on Facebook and Instagram have adopted such bears (and foxes and wolves) as our sign of support and solidarity.

This was my first experiment with fondant. I always see how they use it in baking competitions on TV.

Die Farbmischung hat ganz gut geklappt. Das größte Problem ist immer die Beschaffung des Fondants.

 Trying to mix colours. It works quite well. The biggest problem is always finding the ready-to-roll fondant.

Ich bin nach wie vor ein blutiger Amateur und habe auch keine Ambitionen, so gut wie ein Profi zu werden, weil ich einfach nicht gut genug backen kann.

I am still a total amateur and don't have the ambition to become as good as a professional. My baking skills are just not good enough.
